Fall Update

Busy time at the WRJ diamond. I took a group of photos this summer of what I had out on the layout at that time.
My modeling season is just beginning. I did a small amount of modeling over the summer but nothing all that productive. Peter and I will see if we can finish up our N scale modules this fall and we have a few pieces of rolling stock that are partly completed that we plan to finish off. No trips planned to New England yet although there are lots of modeling events going on locally that I would love to attend.

I did get in a lot more rail-fanning than ever before over the summer. A lot of it was unplanned as I just seem to have been in the right place at the right time. Having my camera along while traveling is a plus. With lake time almost over I will be found in the basement a lot more...now to change over the eras so it reflects the 1950's on the White River Division once again...George Dutka

I just finished the base this week. Red's is open for buisness on the WRD. It is another drop in that has been added for my later era operations. The crews need somewhere to eat...more on it shortly.

August 30. 2017 I was in Stratford with my wife to take in the shops and food locations on the main street. I was able to make a side trip past the station. A GEXR power move was happening as I arrived. I was there long enough to see them move through the siding to a point east of the station were they appeared to be waiting for something.

The power and crew are ready for something to happen but we did not stay to see what.
Couple more of my cabooses headed to winter storage shortly. The local has a lot to do if they want the yard cleared out in the next week or two.

White River Division - A Look Back

My old 0-6-0 was still running at the time Summit was in use. These Maine Two foot buildings were stand-in's till I constructed Crosby Coal.
I was going through some of my old files of images from when I had a digital camera available to me. Most are from 2008 and early 2009. Most of my photography till Dec. 2009 was print and slides. I got my first real digital camera Canon A590 in 2008 followed by a Canon Rebel when I retired in Nov. 2009 and shortly after my print camera's (all three of them) were retired. These views are digital but taken with my A590, my daughters camera or with an old digital camera someone gave me that I think had memory for about a couple dozen views max. My Rutland Ry. brass caboose is seen heading behind the barn and pumpkin patch. Actually one of these old views made it into RMC a couple of years ago in my pumpkin patch article while others can be found in 2008-2009 Walthers Catalog.
A CV train heads into WRJ off my duck-under module. Part of the water scene was a lakefront cabin scene that really never got photographed much.

An overall view of what West Barre once looked like. It got an upgrade followed by some newer drop in scenes before being removed so my WRJ yard could be seen and used. Behind the trees and station is a three track staging yard that today is in full view. This main line track was reused as a fourth track in the yard but cut out and moved back behind the yard office.

Once again looking down the track at West Barre. The engine was detailed by Don Janes. I purchased it off him years ago. The train order signal is scratch-built and the station is an old balsa wood covered with paper siding kit that I had as a child. Somehow it made it through two sets of kids and 60 years. I added new boards, windows and roofing. Since then it got a second upgrade and looks even better now.

Bellows Falls Co-Operative Creamery - Finished Scene

The finished creamery scene in Bellows Falls built as a building flat. I have a good fleet of milk cars that can be spotted out front. This cars are made from Walthers-Train Miniature reefers.
This is an update from my Feb. 5, 2017 post on my Bellows Falls Co-Operative Creamery. The scenery around the creamery has been finished since late winter but I am way behind with layout posts. As one can see the siding and junk I normally add to my scenes is all in place. The Athearn trailer has a BF Co-Op creamery logo applied. Not sure of the colours used on the trailers but for now mine are going to be silver. This part of the structure I purchased already assembled. I did take it apart repainting it and changing out some doorways and windows.

This portion of the creamery is part kit-bashed, part scratch-built...all things I had on hand making this structure a really cheap build.

My brass milk car is on the Conn. River siding waiting to be moved to the creamery.

Railfanning a Basketball Tournament

A CN WB is heading out of Aldershot yard headed for Sarnia, Ontario. The culvert one can see to the left is the road that the Burlington Model Railroad Center is on with the parking just out of sight to the right.
As mentioned earlier I kind of participated in an over 60 basketball tournament. After being at the lake most of the summer I was way out of shape and it really showed...have had a hard time walking this past week. Anyhow what you might be interested in is the between game visits to Aldershot, Hamilton and the NMRA - ID meet at the Burlington Model RR Center's Club open house.

With 4 hours between games on Saturday I headed over to Aldershot to check things out then over a couple of blocks to see the three layouts on site (I had already missed their railfan morning at the Junction). From there it was off to the old CN yard and the new GO station in Hamilton. There was some action in town, but it was nice to look around at what had changed over the years. I also got down to the marina as it also is close by.

On Friday I had headed out early from home to check out Credit Valley Hobbies and some of the locations along the CP nearby before the late afternoon game...all and all a busy weekend...George Dutka

At the club which is located right in the middle of a nice city park in Burlington is this structure which houses a N and HO scale layout. In behind there is an outdoor large scale layout.

Over in Hamilton one can see the engines laying over. There is a high fence at this location that I had to shoot through the openings. I am standing in the GO station parking lot.

Lisgar, Ontario - a CP and GO Location

Last night I was looking through a CP picture book by Greg McDonnell that Peter loaned me this fall. I got as far as page 16 when I came across a nice rural view of a set of CPR RDC's in the countryside noted at Lisgar, Ont. I knew that location right away as I just visited it by accident last Friday on my way to Credit Valley hobby shop. I had made a wrong turn...let me explain. I was on my way to an old timers basketball tournament in Burlington, Ont. when I took some back roads around Milton to get to the hobby shop since the freeway was stop and go into Toronto. I came across a newer GO train location named Lisgar just a few blocks away from Winston Churchill Boulevard in Mississauga which is nothing like what I saw in the book.

As one can see in these view today there is a nice new train station, a huge parking lot and a nice long covered platform all looking very new. The tracks are in really nice shape surrounded by subdivisions as far as one can see to the south and some warehouses to the north....how times have changed...George Dutka

CN Noodle

My local CN pensioners newsletter had an interesting article about the CN logo...here is a portion of it...George Dutka

"CN announced on June 28, 2017 that they are recognized as an iconic Canadian brand by Interbrand Canada for Canada 150. When Allan Fleming designed CN's logo, he said a logo should last at least 50 years. Fleming's logo was unveiled in 1960. As the logo nears its 57th birthday, it's evident it has withstood the test of time. Fleming's CN is one of Canada's best-known design icons. In addition he also designed the Ontario Hydro logo and was the art director for Maclean's magazine. Fleming died in 1977 at the age of 48."

N Scale Trailers


I was surprised to see a Vermont Railway trailer had made it down to Florida. By the looks of it the salt air is working it's magic on it...not sure if it will ever make it back home.

Salt Weathering

Salt cars in the yard at Goderich, Ontario. Some really nice streaking has occurred on these cars.
If you have been near a salt mine or an unloading area of covered hoppers loaded with salt one will get a good look at how to weather these type of cars. This group of photos if a portion of the fleet that arrive and depart the salt mine in Goderich, Ontario on the GEXR. I have shown you the most rusty of the fleet...happy weathering...George Dutka

This is one of the more rusty hoppers. Many are still pretty clean looking. The plastic hatches really stand out.

The North Dorset Mill

Finally Finished - The Old Mill Scene....by Don  Janes

     Quite a few years ago my good friend lou Sassi decided to move from New York to North Carolina.  Lou had a beautiful HO scale New England layout that had to come down.  Everything had to go because once he settled in his new home he was changing his modelling to On30.  Lou had several structures that I really wanted to have for my layout and the Martin Machine structure from South River Model Works was one of them.  Lou had built this kit for an MR product review but never put it on his layout.  We negotiated a price on this and another mill and I made the trip to New York State to pick up my purchases.  Once I got it home it sat in my basement until last fall when I finally had a spot to put it into my layout.  With the help of my friend Greg Rich from New Baltimore Mich. (I covered his layout on a previous blog post) I got the structure in place and decided how I hoped it would look when finished.  After almost a year of  working away at the scene, bit at a time I finally have it pretty well finished.  There is a little more scenery to do around the scene and more fine detail to add but overall it is done.
    Once I had the main mill in place with the pond and damn I realized I needed another mill type structure in the background to help fill out the scene so I built another SRMW kit I had on hand, Lamson and Goodson, and placed it behind the white mill. This new structure helped complete the mill complex and also hide the mainline track where it disappears into the wall.
    The mill is served by a rail siding which has a loading dock for boxcars and a concrete pad with a small crane for loading larger items onto flat cars or into gondolas.
     This was a fun project and I really learned a lot about rock work, water and making rapids.
