Richord Sub. - Dave Clark's View

It is June 1973 and CV 1511-1510 handle the local wayfrieght along the Richford Sub. in Northern Vermont. Dave Clark photo.
Ian Stronach sent me a group of slide he acquired from his late friend Dave Clark. Dave would railfan with Ian on occasions. This view was from a trip to Vermont and particular the Richford Sub. I am scanning all his views prior to donating them to the CVRHS archives as a donation from Ian...George Dutka

CV Outside Brace Boxcar Kit - Updated

Ready for service.
I had mentioned this car a few posts back. It is a Steam Shack-F&C kit that was built by Roger Chrysler. I giving the car a good wash as there was a good amount of dust on it. Then I touching up the paint that was knocked off with Floquil boxcar red.  I added a few Northeastern chalk mark decals before a coat of Tamiya flat clear was applied.

I changed out the trucks with Andrews by Tichy. Wheels were painted cinnamon brown and the trucks Vallejo rust texture. The roof got a coat of acrylic dark gray wash followed by some PanPastel powders over the gray. The side walls are done lightly with a very dark gray PanPastel, mainly on the door, lower sides of the cars and the ribs...George Dutka

Some kick-up spray was added to the ends above the wheels. These are the PanPastel colors used on this car.

Chalk marks are added to both sides.

The trucks are changed out to follow the prototype.

Weathered Rutland Ry Boxcars

A view from Bellows Falls back in 1962.

These views are courtesy of David Hutchinson. We see two Rutland Ry boxcars in the background. I have cropped these cars for the second photo to show you how they looked at the end of the Rutland. As modelers many of our cars on the layout look pretty new. These Rutland cars when new really caught your attention. Modeling them how they look in the 1960's should have them with a good coat of dust and grime and blending into the background...George Dutka

B&M Air Slide Model

Just out of the box my used B&M air slide.

I picked up this B&M air slide last year and just got around to adding a flat finish and some weathering...George Dutka

These three shades of PanPastels are what I applied to the car. I did use a Macron pen to add a few rust spots on the rood and lower sides.

Finished with a light weathering to the roof and sides.

Out on the layout.

April 2025 - Update

CV engine in use on the GTW in 1990. Collection of Keith and Peter MacCauley.

Just a bit of this and that I thought I would share with you plus some modeling I just finished. I have been out railfanning recently and a few views from what I saw can also be found here...George Dutka

I purchased these brushes awhile back at the hobby shop in Paris, Ont. They have turned out to be really nice to work with and I use them all the time nos. I feel they were well worth the money.

Bruce Douglas sent me this view of his StJ&LC caboose that he has had for many years. Still needs painting though.

A CPKC WB passes under the Denfield Rd. bridge. This is a local railfan locations were both the CPKC and CN pass under side by side. It has been pretty overgrown the last decade but last year the railways cleaned away a lot of the brush which now allows one to get a photo of the bridge. Most photos in the past were taken from on the bridge. There are only a few homes on the other side of the bridge that this road serves but required.

CPKC WB passes the Denfield Rd wooden bridge on April 21, 2025. The bridges weight limit is 4 tons.

I purchased this car from Roger Chrysler recently at a train show. He is downsizing his collection of craftsman kits that he built over the decades. The car is a Steam Shack-F&C kit that Roger did a really nice job on. I just wanted to add my own personal touch to the model.

I touched up the paint on the model, added some weathering and new trucks. More will be posted about this car in another post.

B&M Scotia Station near Rotterdam Jct. Steve Myers collection.

London has not been getting the cream of the crop power lately. This one is mostly hand painted. What I wanted to show you is the pile of spikes and ties in town piled up along Pine St. I recently noted some new ribbon rail along the main line through town. Looks like a work project will be happening soon. April 5, 2025 George Dutka photo

The WOD - NMRA Saturday Meet-up

I found it interesting that a lot of the layout is only one foot wide, but still offered a lot of detail and trackage as seen in this view. There are areas that are less than a foot too.
This past Saturday our area NMRA group gathered at two layouts, one in Thorndale and the other in St. Mary's. We had lunch between the two visits at the St. Mary's golf course. We also did a group shot out front of the St. Mary's station. This post I am focusing on some of the details of Davin Heinbuck's Texas based layout. Don Janes covered the layout and an operating session there last fall on the blog...George Dutka.

All rolling stock on the layout is very well weathered.

Some of the larger buildings are flats, while others are smaller but effective in the scenes.

Davin's backdrops were well done with the roadway matching it well.

The fueling station had a nicely weathered concrete pad.

Davin uses code 100 flex track which he weathers well and Woodland scenic ballast. I thought he did a very nice job with the ROW.

Ex-VTR hopper all weathered up.

The WOD members that stayed behind to operate listen to instructions from Davin who is in the white shirt.

CV - State Line

This photo was taken in 1983 by Theodore W. Bossert.
This view is of State Line Ct. at the Massachusetts and Connecticut border. CV caboose is on the main line while a cut of cars and engine are in the siding. Looks like new ballast is down...George Dutka

CV Rapido Hoppers

I added some cinders that I crushed to a smaller size found locally in the St Thomas CASO yard between the rails.
I finally got around to finishing my Rapido CV hoppers. They needed the brake wheel housing changed and also the platform. Some flat finish and weathering is also done...George Dutka

The brake wheel and housing has been changed out and a new platform was constructed from styrene using photos I have seen.

Off to work on the White River Division.

I kept the weathering light on this model.

CV Woodchip Car

The brake wheel platforms, wheel and housing are attached and ready for paint. I just touched these up with appropriate paints using a brush. Floquil paint was used for the brown.
The CV woodchip car I purchased at Springfield this winter was made from a Rapido model. The brake wheel needed to be changed to resemble the CV hoppers. The platforms on the CV cars are a bit longer than on a normal hopper. I worked on this model the same time as I did my CV hoppers. The photos tell the story...George Dutka

The new pieces are painted MIG black followed with a bit of PanPastel powder on the wheel and platform.

B&M Gondola Stenciling

Steve Myers photo
Steve Myers took this photo at the shop well over a decade ago. He comments the gondola came through the car shop for repairs so the shop crew made a stencil for it...George Dutka

Green Mountain Division - Don Janes

A rural scene on Don Janes layout. Don Janes photo.
Another nice view of Don Janes Green Mountain Division. He posted this one a couple of weeks ago on a Canadian modeling groups Facebook page as a Front End Friday (FEF) contribution...George Dutka

Buffalo Creek Boxcar

Buffalo Creek had a large size fleet of boxcars for flour loading which were seen on a regular basis on the Central Vermont Ry. I have modeled one already but this one is a bit different looking with the running boards removed ladders shortened and herald missing. No information was included with the image.
Here is a view of a Buffalo Creek 40' boxcar that one does not normally see of this fleet of rolling stock. Lots of flour can be seen around the lower area of the door. I think a neat model of this car could be built...George Dutka

Ancaster Ont. Train Show

Some of Peter Mumby's engines

Last weekend was the Ancaster, Ont. train show near Hamilton. A lot of Peter Mumby's models were there for sale and lots sold. Here are some photos I took of  his models before the show began...George Dutka

Steve Bratina was looking after selling Peter's engines. He checked them all out prior to the show...making sure everything worked well. Most or maybe all seen here are DC. They date back years, some to when he first got into the hobby.

Gary looked after selling Peter Mumby's rolling stock for his wife Ann.

A small portion of Peter's rolling stock that he either built or weathered.
