Throwback Thursday - ONT Van

ONT 111 was resting in the yard at Englehart in late August of 1991.
By Peter Mumby.

Cabooses were still in use by the Ontario Northland Railway when ONT 111 was photographed at Englehart on August 28, 1991.  This particular car was ex-ONT 91 of the 90-97 series.  It had been built by National Steel Car for the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway as TEM 91.

Weathering Clinic - Rolling Stock

The group are just beginning their models. The room supplied was very nice with a great view of the river and CN spur line. The CN ferry - boat yard was once located about a block away.
On Saturday I was invited to give a weathering clinic to the Sarnia Modeling Club. It was about how I do my rolling stock using PanPasels and some acrylic paints and stains. I am glad we had a smaller group of 9 which made it easier to concentrate on each modeler. I had a nice group of my models to view and use as inspiration. We had On30", N and HO scale modelers in the group...all went home with a pretty good model with light to medium levels of weathering...George Dutka

Sue and Doug working on their models Doug models TH&B so Sue had a 40' boxcar to weather. She actually did very well with a light hand at weathering and followed my instruction well when she painted the roof. Bruce worked on two models.

Jim Sloan was in the crowd working on his CN Rapido boxcar. He had a chance to play around with some of my PanPastels and really did not need any instructions. His model looked great when he left but I am sure there will be more work done to it when he gets home. Check his blog for what he is working on. It is on the sidebar.

Steve was working on some N scale models. He had a great time trying out new products and his models looked great. I found it takes just as long to do an N scale weathering job as HO. Especially when he is painting those tiny wheels and trucks.

On my way out of town the sun was still good so I stopped by to take a photo of CN 6069 off the hill.

On my way to Sarina I followed the tracks taking backroads instead of 400 series highways. I caught CN EB 148 at the Watford section house, the midway location from my home to Sarnia. I did not have any time to get up on the overpass for a good view as I got to the location as the train arrived. I just opened the car door and took my photo. I really did not want those posts in the middle of my photo, oh well that's life.

South Simcoe Railway

The train was due to leave but passengers were still boarding for the 1430 run to Beeton.
I had not been to the South Simcoe Railway in over 20 years, so I planned a visit following the Kitchener train show and visiting with my friend Paul. Unfortunatley the steam engine has not been running this year...on my last visit the engine handled the train. The coaches looked to be in great shape but the equipment on display on site that was available to see is looking quite worn. There is a lot of the site that is roped off so I really could not see the whole collection.

It was a busy day with the train sold out for the 230pm run. I had arrived shortly before it left but decided to not chase it as is it was raining on and off. It was a funny day I had rain, sun and heavy overcast skies at times...if I come back again it will be to see steam running...George Dutka

There was a good crowd looking around prior to boarding the train. Oct 6, 2024.

The power for the day.

A light drizzle was happening as I left and took this photo.

Milwaukee Road Rib Side boxcar with Roof Hatches

Intermountain released sometime ago a nice spent grain brewery service boxcar with roof hatches. Not something that fits well into my New England scene but I purchased one anyhow. I gave the car a flat finish and very light weathering. I wanted the car to look pretty new.

Trucks are AK winter steaking grime and the roof Anita's acrylic charcoal wash followed by PanPastel raw umber shade, then white and Paynes grey extra dark on the roof edges.

The side panels are faded using PanPastel blender and some steaking with raw umber shade. Using PanPastels one can weather a car in less than an hour and I feel this car blends into my fleet very well if a number of cars are done with PanPastel...George Dutka

The roof gets a wash of grey.

The tones of PanPastels I used on this model.

GPEX 783 Milk Reefer being scrapped.

Here are two views I found on one of the Yahoo Groups I follow. Thought the milk car guys would like these which show the inside of one car. Thanks Claus Schlund for pointing these out...George Dutka

MEC Single Sheathed Boxcar - Rapido

A Rapido nice looking piece of rolling stock.
This was a simple weathering job as it is on the light side and no details needed to be applied. First Tamiya TS-80 flat clear is first applied. Trucks are painted AK winter streaking grime and wheels Americana cinnamon stick.

Running boards are painted Flokart barn wood # 936 which is a nice color for weathered wood. On the roof I applied Crafters charcoal grey followed by PanPastel red iron oxide on the ribs and edges followed by raw umber shade in the middle of the panels.

Sides are done with PanPastel Paynes extra dark on ribs, edges and door, then colorless blender inside the panels as fading. Some PanPastel red iron oxide extra dark and raw umber shade is used as highlights.

That's about it...a short afternoon...George Dutka

Throwback Thursday - Not Always White

London police car 48 was photographed at CN Rectory St.
By Peter Mumby.

If I was building a contemporary layout based on my locality, any police car models would be painted white.  This seems to be the standard current colour, regardless of the jurisdiction.  However, this was not always the case, as can be seen in today’s shots from the early 1990s featuring cars from the City of London and the Ontario Provincial Police.  Both photos were taken on April 08, 1990.

OPP car 2-559 posed for its portrait in Woodstock, Ontario.

Bill Moore's B&M Layout

Bill has just pulled out of his roundhouse a CP engine by Broadway Limited.
A couple of weeks ago I visited with Bill Moore in Michigan. He has a nice larger size B&M layout on the go which also includes equipment and engines from other railroads. Two of his newer acquisitions are CPR...here are a few views of what I saw on my visit...George Dutka

The Broadway Limited CPR engine has a smoke unit which was neat to watch. The engine is being backed up into a siding.

Bill has a CPR offering by Rapido which runs awesome. It has got me thinking.

The Crawford Notch station is from his old layout which will be incorporated into this one.

This and That - October 2024

One of Peter Mumby's older engines that was build many years ago that is for sale at local train shows. He has a good collection of engines to sell at the shows.
Just a mix of railfan and model photos that you might enjoy viewing...George Dutka

Another one of Peter's engines...not sure why he modeled Conrail at one time.
On October 19, 2024 just east of Komoka I caught CP EB train 528, the hot shot Ethanol train. It has one unit on the head end, then a spacer-idler car the loaded tanks another spacer-idler car and a locomotive pushing.

The tail end.

Looking east toward Frank Lane the NS pusher is working pushing the train loaded with Ethanol.

Last week I traveled to Pt Dover and then over to Burlington. I visited a few stations still standing and also a couple of hobby shops. I had not been to Dundas Valley Hobbies in a long time. Although the train selection was thin I found the largest paint display I have seen in a hobby shop. Nice to know I can get almost anything I want in paint there.

This is just over half of the paint supply in this view. There is a nice selection of brushes, glues and styrene.

Steve was at the Woodstock train show yesterday with a good selection of Peter Mumby's engines for sale.

Peter's VIA units which were built years ago, but well detailed.

A ceramic version of the North Conway NH station was for sale at the Kitchener train show a few weeks ago.

A well worn CN 40 foot boxcar logo on the grounds of the South Simcoe Ry. Oct. 6 2024.

Looking west along the CP Lovekin siding towards Newmarket from Lakeshore Rd.

Looking at the Lakeshore Rd bridge over the CN tracks from the CP mainline at Lovekin. This is one of a number of bridges near Newtonville that are great to railfan from.

I took a few shots of my rooftops using my cell phone. Here is my Accurail CV boxcar.

Another cell phone view of the Ertl boxcar that Peter Mumby gave me awhile back that I weathered and detailed. I vary the looks of each of these roofs.

CNR - Washago

Ian Wilson produced a book of this location during the 1952 era which looks a lot different than what one will see today if one visited.
This summer I stopped twice at Washago, Ontario just north of Orillia on my way to Muskoka. Once on purpose as I had not been there before and was wondering how it was laid out. The second time was by chance as my GPS took me through town. Although I did not see any trains I did have a chance to take a look around at the VIA and old CNR station still standing. The coal and water tank are still in place although the water tank looks a lot different that in the photos I have seen. The tracks to Atherley and Orillia are gone although a piece of the east end of the old wye is still there not attached to the main but has railcars on it...not sure what that is all about.

The CNR station looks different than in photos from the past. The roofline overhang has maybe changed a bit. A CN trailer now used as a work crew office is set between the two stations...George Dutka

The current VIA station and water tank which is different than what was once used by the railroad, but same location.

The old Washago CN station.

Station signs still in place on the old station.

Looking down towards the old coal tower.
