On a modular layout at Trainfest this year I thought this modeler did a fine job placing a container and trailer next to a structure. It looks like what one may find in some areas where older structures are found...George Dutka
Graffiti-covered dumpsters are also good for this, and also cheap HO car models that have been burned out! Bachmann cars are good candidates, since they're about the cheapest and represent older ones.
