GMD Recollections - Export, Eh?

Iarnrod Eireann #215 sits loaded on CP flat 315579 in Quebec St yard on December 04, 1994.
By Peter Mumby.
Although the majority of GMD's production was for the North American market, a fair number of export locomotives passed through the gates of the plant.  Most of these units were eventually loaded onto ships at Montreal or Halifax.  Like the subject of today's photo, many left GMD loaded on CN or CP flat cars.  Often times these units would be completely tarped, so it was nice to observe the examples that were more accessible to the camera.  Number 215 shown here was one of the 201 class locomotives of the Iarnrod Eireann in Northern Ireland.  Equipped with an EMD 12-710GSB engine, these model JT42HCW units were assembled in London during 1994 and 1995.

  1. Yes I use to pass Rockingham Yard ( Halifax) on my way to work everyday, and the units were most often tarped over, although it was easy to tell they were units for foreign markets.Cheers
