Flying Yankee

Car A is seen in for repairs following its derailment in Bellows Falls, Vt. Thanks Ken Borg for sending me the photo and the notes.
The only serious accident to involve the Flying Yankee occurred on January 19, 1945 in the rail yard at North Walpole, NH. Ice was the cause that derailed the train. The train left the tracks running into a section house. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. The nose of car A was crumpled and the frame was bent...George Dutka

  1. Was it light enough to be derailed by ice? Or was it more of a fowled turnout by ice? Inquiring minds want to know.

  3. The derailment occurred at Walpole, New Hampshire, on the Cheshire Branch, about four miles south of Bellows Falls. The 6ooo was running as train no. 5506, the Cheshire (White River Jct to Boston via Bellows Falls). I believe it ran into the end of the Walpole freight house, not a section house.
