A Major Kitbashing Project.....by Don Janes
Earlier this year I decided to venture away from my 1950's New England Modelling and start a small 1980's switching layout in another room in the basement. This time I am focusing on Southern Ontario in the 1980's, featuring CN and CP four axle power and some typical industries found in the area in the 1980's. I have built up a sizeable roster of appropriate locomotives and rolling stock. I had been looking at an article by Tom Johnson in the July 2023 RMC about kitbashing a feed mill. It really caught my fancy so I started buying the necessary kits to do my version of the mill. Basically if consists of three Walthers Valley Growers Association corrugated steel mills, several Rix grain bins and cyclone vent, some Walthers wet/dry bins, two Walthers grain dryers, one Walthers surge bin and Walther Cornerstone Clayton County Lumber sheds. I also bought parts from Southern-Tier Grain Modelers Supply (part of the Steel Mill Modelers Supply) including some grain wagons, a grain elevator/conveyor Grain diverter Valves. This company has some excellent parts for reasonable prices.
This is the road side view of the mill. |
The build was much to complex to try to describe how I did it so I will just post a bunch of photos to get an overall look at the project. I started about mid April this year and finally finished it this weekend. I still need to add a few more details such as feed sacks and signage but I can add that as I find the parts and appropriate signs that I need. I had a lot of fun building this project and now it is on to my next structure for the new shelf layout. This has been a refreshing change from modelling 1950's New England for the last 30 years. That layout is still intact and I work between the two as time permits.
Wow! Very impressive. I've always had a soft spot for these types of grain elevators. There is so much detail!
