Icing Reefers in Prince Albert - 1944

Pork from Burns is being iced in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan during 1944. It appears blocks of ice are slid onto the roof walks then broken up prior to being shoved into the hatches.

Another view from the Everett Barkers collection taken in the 1940's. Enjoy...George Dutka

  1. It is true. Ice was always chopped up and put into the ends of reefers... usually mixed with salt to help it melt and cool quicker. Rarely is that modeled on layouts. Normally, they only show blocks of ice being moved.
