ATSF 148
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway took delivery of GP60M ATSF 148 from GMDD London in July of 1990. Unfortunately, No. 148 would be destroyed in a derailment after just four months of service. EMD/GMDD’s GP60 was the last four axle road switcher type locomotive catalogued by the legendary builder, the ultimate evolution of Richard M Dilworth’s iconic GP7 from 1949. Over so called first and second generation design development, horsepower more than doubled from 1,500 to 3,800. Unique to the GP60 model was cab design; so called ‘Spartan’ (introduced with the GP35), ‘Comfort Cab (GP60M)’ and none (GP60B). Further to three demonstrator locomotives (ultimately acquired by CSX), GP60 customers would include Norfolk Southern, Rio Grande, Texas Mexican, Department of Energy and Southern Pacific; who would acquire almost half of the nearly four hundred produced. Aside from wreck removals, virtually all GP60 variants soldier on, albeit most for subsequent merger railroads Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific.
