Throwback Thursday

SD70M UP 4005

No doubt the high water mark of locomotive manufacturing at the GMDD facility in London Ontario must have been the one-thousand-unit order of SD70M’s for Union Pacific. By then known as General Motors Locomotive Group (GMLG), production would begin in the early part of 2000 and stretch almost to the end of 2002. Not all of the UP SD70M’s came from southwestern Ontario; EMD shared production with Mexican contractor Bombardier- Concarril (512) in Sahagun as well as upstate New York based SuperSteel Schenectady Inc. (SSSI) (46) out of Glenville. UP 4005 was delivered in May of 2000, part of the initial UP 4000 – 4074 series. Officially a ‘Tier 0’ locomotive, emission wise, the six axle unit sported the legendary traditional grey and yellow paint scheme, punctuated with a bold UP ‘Wings’ emblem on the nose.
