My finished Rapido boxcar which originally began with some AK pencil streaking. |
This car was weathered awhile ago but came back to the workbench for a new finish to the roof and running boards. It is a neat model that Rapido released a couple of years ago. I originally changed out the no. 5 couplers with Kadee 158. Wheels are painted cinnamon brown with Bragdon Soot applied. The roof panels are painted Ceramcoat rainy day grey then a coating of PanPastel neutral grey shade and red iron oxide extra dark is applied.
AK dark steel a powder is applied to the trucks. On the sides some AK pencil streaks are applied to the board grooves which looked kind of neat.
I later toned down the AK pencil streaks with a light coat of PanPastel red iron oxide extra dark over the sides. The marks do show through lightly which is a nice effect. Running boards are painted Floquil grime with PanPastel raw umber shade coating done lightly once dry. Paynes grey extra dark (a near black) is applied to the door edges, upper and lower body area. Just subtle changes to the finish make a big difference when added back into the fleet. The car is now ready for service once again and made its rounds on the layout recently....George Dutka
