A comparison of wheel sizes. |
I recently purchase a box of Rapido HO 33" wheelsets that are code 88 fine tread. The wheel in the foreground it Rapido's standard tread which I have been using as replacements for plastic wheels. I will let you know how I like the code 88's shortly which are seen at the rear...what do you use?
We will look at how I paint my wheels...George Dutka
I have been using wheelsets I got from John Green at Bethlehem Car Works and they've been just fine. They're much like the wheel set in the foreground
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments...never thought of Bethlehem Car Works for wheels...George
DeleteI wonder why Rapido includes 50 axles in the box, as 50 does not divide by 4.

Hi Jim I noted that also when I purchased my box. Rapido has boxes of 50 and 100 wheelsets.
DeleteHi George,
ReplyDeleteTheoretically, Code 88 wheels should not work on through the full range of tolerance afforded by the NMRA standards. However, most modellers stick to one manufacturer's turnouts, and consequently are not using the full range. Therefore, some people report that Code 88 wheels work fine, while others find they can't hold the rail at all. I shall be interested to hear about your findings.
To answer your question, I use mostly Alan Gibson's P87 wheels, which are sadly no longer available. :-)
I’ve standardized my fleet with the Rapido Code 88 fine scale. I honestly never noted that the 50 box isn’t an even number of cars, as I started my fleet with two boxes of 50 and either got 100 boxes or 12 axles on a blister card depending on what I could find for a while when Rapido was out of stock.
